CICADAS: MORPHOLOGY, BIOLOGY, ETC.

CICADIDAE MAGICICADA
Entomology and Morphology

Cicadas are a group of large flying insects of the order Hemiptera, suborder Auchenorrhyncha. This large family (Cicadidae) of invertebrates consists of over two thousand five hundred species, occupying every continent except Antarctica. Cicadas spend the majority of their lives underground as nymphs, burrowing deep into the earth and feeding off tree roots. Over a period of three to nineteen years (depending on species) the nymphs mature and emerging from their subterranean catacombs simultaneously in large swarms to molt into their winged adult forms. Humans and cicadas share a long and magical mythology. The interactions and legends our two species share stretches across recorded history, touching almost every civilization and corner of this planet. Whether being treated as little more than a valuable source of protein or being revered as messengers of the gods our two species are intimately intertwined. A fractal exchange stretching back into the depths of antediluvian time.

Life Cycle and Behavior

The pregnant  female cicada cuts slits into small branches using her ovipositor, a sharp, knife-like structure on the end of her abdomen. In these shallow grooves she deposits her eggs, small white structures similar in shape to a grain of rice. Once the eggs hatch the newborn nymphs drop to the ground and begin the arduous task of burrowing into the ground. The nymph’s burrow is generally only a foot or so deep, however they have been know to dig as deep as three meters. Once underground the nymphs tunnel until they locate a tree root and feed off of it using a sharp proboscis. A cicada’s diet consists exclusively of tree sap, specifically the xylem. They feed mostly off deciduous trees such as oaks, maples, willows, etc. It is believed that the nymphs are able to “taste” seasonal differences in the sap while underground. Some entomologists believe that this may be how they time their group exodus from their dark tunnels when they molt into adults.

There are two main groups of cicadas, Magicicada or periodical species and Tibicen or “dog-day” varieties. The Tibicen broods are staged so that some emerge every summer. The subterranean life cycle of these species varies from two to seven years depending on species. (It is interesting from an occult perspective to note that the vast majority of cicadas, Magicicada and Tibicen, have multi-year life cycles that are prime numbers. 2,5,7,13, 17,and 19…) Upon receiving their mysterious “signal” the nymph's begin burrowing up and emerge from the ground over a period of several days or all at once in large broods. The cicadas then climb the nearest tall object or tree (frequently the same one they fell from years before) and latch onto it. Once secure, the nymphs undergo their final metamorphosis and molt into their adult forms. A line breaks open down the spine and the winged adult wiggles out of its exoskeleton in a pulsing backbend. The soft bodied adult clings to its former skin and waits. In a span of minutes its skin darkens  and begins transforming into a protective chitlin carapace and its compressed wings are unfurled as liquid is pumped into them. It may take up to 6 days for Magicicada species to completely harden and embrace their new bodies, their skin crystalizing into a regal new armor. The newborn adult then leaves its chthonic husk behind and continues its ascent into the upper reaches of the tree.

The newly hatched imago’s fly upwards and join together in large choruses consisting of thousands of singing males and clicking females. The noise generated by a large brood emerging at the same time can be deafening. The males sing a species specific song until a female approaches and responds by clicking her wings together. Upon hearing the female’s receptive click the male changes his song to a more seductive melody and approaches her to mate. Once mating has concluded the female flies away. She will land on a nearby tree or branch and cut small, V-shaped slits into the bark. Into these slits she will deposit twenty or so eggs per incision until she has carefully laid them all, usually totaling somewhere around six hundred eggs.

Within weeks of their emergence and metamorphosis all the adult cicadas are dead. Their bodies fall from the trees and litter the forest’s floor providing a feast for other animals as well as decaying and feeding the earth itself. The adult life of a cicada is exceedingly brief in comparison to the years spent as a nymph; toiling away in the dark and silent ground. Years and years of patient silence culminating in a Dionysian month of flying, fucking, singing and worshiping the sun. Then, just as quickly as they emerged, death claims them. One and all.

Although this abrupt ending may strike you as somewhat bitter-sweet, the cicadas have lived, loved and fulfilled their genetic promise. Several weeks after their parents have passed away the eggs hidden in the branches above begin to hatch.  The tiny nymphs wriggle free of the wood and drop from their lofty nurseries to the ground below. This newborn brood of  insects then begins their incredible life cycle anew. Upon landing on the forest floor, The nymphs immediately burrow deep underground to wait in total darkness for the next thirteen or seventeen years. Waiting in the dark for that mysterious signal, waiting for their day to sing, fly and worship.

Morphology

Cicadas go through several distinct life stages on their path to adulthood. The nymphs emerge from their eggs encapsulated in a tight embryonic skin making them resemble a small fish or slug. Upon exiting the wooden hole cut by its mother the nymph promptly sheds its jacket and frees its legs. The newborn nymphs are extremely small but already possess strong digging forearms and the will to use them. The nymphs immediately fall to the ground and crawl into the first hole or crack in the ground that meets their requirements. Over the next several months the young insects will burrow deeper and deeper into the ground. They start feeding by sucking sap from small rootlets near the surface; gradually working their way down to larger tree roots as they increase in size and appetite. The nymphs go through five molts or “instars” during their time underground, usually spending several years between each stage feeding and enlarging their burrows. After each molting the nymph emerges from its old skin larger and more “tank-like”. The forelegs in particular become much more formidable at the second instar stage. These front legs are highly specialized claws which strongly resemble a pick axe and are used in the exact same fashion; hacking through the tough ground in search of more roots to feed from.

During the nymph stage of a cicadas life they are completely subterranean. They have a powerful and compact body, no wings (In the fourth and fifth instar stage vestigial wing “pads” become apparent.) and though they do possess eyes at this stage they are noticeably smaller than in their adult forms as they have no need for them.  At no point in their life do they possess a true set of jaws, simply a long, sharp proboscis similar to their cousins the aphids. This proboscis is tucked tightly against their stomach when not in use but can fold down and extend to allow the nymph to pierce a root of its parent tree and suck the sap which flows within. Once the nymph molts into its fifth instar stage, prior to emerging from the ground, it is roughly an inch to an inch and a quarter  in length. It also more closely resembles its final adult form with large, well developed eyes, obvious wing pads, proportionately smaller front claws and the wide, fat body unique to its species.

Upon receiving its mysterious signal to emerge from the ground, the cicada nymphs make their way to the surface in huge numbers. These mass emergences can be staggered over several days or happen all at once (depending on species and other unknown factors.). Upon breaking free of the earth the cicada nymphs immediately make their way to any convenient tree or vertical surface and climb up it to molt into their final adult forms. There are numerous accounts of cicadas emerging into basements and root cellars with earthen floors. Due to the length of time it takes many cicadas to reach maturity (a decade or more) it is not uncommon for a house or other building to be constructed on top of an immature brood, only to have the nymphs swarm into the buildings and surrounding area. Once reaching a convenient and secure location the nymphs latch onto whatever vertical surface they happen to climb and begin the delicate operation of molting into their adult form. The exoskeleton of the nymph splits open down the mesothorax (upper back) and the cicada wriggles out of its old skin in an elegant backbend. Once free, it clings to its securely anchored husk and begins the process of inflating its wings by pumping fluid into the veins that adorn the flattened wings, within several minutes to an hour the wings fully unfurl and harden along with the exoskeleton of the newly born adult. Once this magical crystallization occurs the newly born adult is free to fly into the upper reaches of the forest and begin serenading it’s female brood mates in a musical endeavor to further its genetic promise.

The adult cicada (in entomological parlance, an Imago) is a truly beautiful and unique invertebrate. The adults body is 1 to 4 inches in length, with developed eyes, wings, and unique structures for making sound.  The cicada imago varies greatly in color depending on species and geographic location. Most common varieties are green or brown  in
coloration or black with red eyes in the case of the magicada. There
are also numerous tropical varieties that come in a rainbow of bright
colors. The fully formed adults are physically similar to their nymph
stages the primary difference being that they are now capable of
flight and song.

 Most species of noise-producing insect make sound by stridulation;
the process of rubbing two structures against each other such as the
legs or wings. However, the adult male cicada makes its unique song by
using a complex structure in its abdomen known as a tymbal. the male
cicadas abdomen is mostly hollow and acts as a resonance chamber. on
both sides of the abdominal base there is a membrane internally
connected to a pair of muscles. These muscle rapidly flex and release
"popping" the membrane in and out and generating a loud sound. (think
of it as popping a drink or jam lid with your fingers very quickly.)
The cicada can modulate it's song by slowing and accelerating these
muscular contractions as well as raising or lowering its body off the
ground. Cicadas are among the loudest of all insects some varieties
can produce sounds in excess of 120 decibels, loud enough to cause
permanent hearing damage to humans. A mass brood exodus of thousands
of singing cicadas can be deafening.

THE NATURE OF THE SACRAMENT

Sound. A specific tone. (find tone)
Sight without eyes and movement without legs.
Complete disassociation/dissolution
A place outside of time.
Pure information displaying itself in a non-visible yet visible fashion
Permanent deja vu.
Terms like past present and future are irreverent here yet events appear to move (somewhat) chronologically.
It's full of "living" things.
Some aren't so friendly... and yes, they can touch you.
Some feel almost like humans, children.
"It's so beautiful in here..."
"move like us" "just dance, play, do what we do."
Space peacock manatees from the 8th dimension.
"I'm pretty sure I'm dead..."
"you can't feel your heart or you breath, there is literally nothing to hold on to."
"but so fucking pretty..."
"How long was I down? There's all the time in the world in there."
"boing"
"bung"
"sprung"
"gloop-gloop"
"That tone, it's what I heard first, then it went right through me and washed me away."
"The space-angel-whale-things were nice but that orange octopus thing was really hard to handle.
So far from human...  it just reached right inside me, feeling me out."
"Yeah, I'm definitely dead."

"Well,... I think I'll need awhile to process all that..."

Sverd i fjell (English: Swords in Mountain)

This is the monument of Sverd i fjell outside the city of Stavanger in Norway. It represents a great battle that took place in 872 when Norway was united under one crown. Pretty awesome sculpture if you ask me.

I want to climb the tallest sword in a heavy rainstorm and scream ODIN!!!!!!!! at the top of the hilt while I shake my fist at the sky then I get picked up by a dragon and we sky-fight till lightning strikes us and we both explode, showering Amon Amarth with blood and dragon bits because they were rocking the fuck out at the base of the swords the whole time. Fuck yeah Norway.

FENRIR WILL BREAK FREE

This sculpture is by the Norwegian artist Arne Vinje Gunnerud. It's called
"Fenrir will break free" , 1977, bronze, Notodden teacher's college.
Love this. So pretty and unique. Fenrir is a giant and fearsome wolf who was bound by the god Tyr.
Tyr lost his hand to Fenrir in the process. Fenrir is destined to escape his bondage
during the Ragnarök (endtimes) and kill the god Odin.

The Rituali Acheta

Letter to my co-conspirators: 2012: deep in the mountains of Colorado:

What this is all about.

Hello gentlemen. hope you all are doing well. Ive spoken to you all briefly at various points about helping me with a ritual. Normally I practice all my occult experiments solo but for this one I'm gonna need some assistance. I would like to work with you in a group ritual setting simply because I know you are all capable adepts in your own right. I think that your assistance would be extremely beneficial in raising this rituals power as well as being a jolly good time. The other factor is that I will be buried underground for the majority of the actual ritual work so I will be unable to perform certain actions.  I humbly ask you to participate in a ritual I've been working on for some time now; the Rituali Acheta. This letter and the attached materials are what I have written thus far. Most of the attached chapters are incomplete but I'm including them to give you an idea of what I've been working on. Please read this at your leisure and let me know if you would like to assist me in this endeavor. I want the ritual to take place on saturday night ( october 6th). It would involve us leaving saturday around noon and going camping about an hour from denver, then coming back sunday morning. If this doesn't work for you please let me know soon. If you need to meet us up there later or anything let me know so we can figure it out.

In a nut shell this ritual consists of us going camping (yes, I have a spot ready) doing a bit of meditation/group intention work, burying me in the earth, pouring various liquids over my interred body, more occult meditation, and then banishing by party. There will be four participants including myself. W_____, J_______, N______ and I. All of the participants will have very distinct “jobs” but they will be very straightforward. The vast majority of the actual ritual work is already underway. On the actual day of the ritual I will require some assistance but I will do virtually everything as far as prep work goes. I won’t ask you to memorize long archaic speeches or embark upon extreme ritual obligations. All I ask is that you do your part to the best of your ability with an open mind and honest effort. That being said, I do have very specific roles I hope you all can embrace and fulfill. I will do my best to outline exactly what you need to do and make every step as clear as possible. If you have any questions please contact me and we’ll hash it out.
Each participant needs to invoke a specific “energy” or “current”. Your goal is to INvoke this energy, in a strong meditative manner.  Invite it in, breath it, BEcome it. Each participant will need to use whatever mental training they have available to enter a state of gnosis
To fully yet vacantly embody this planetary archetype.

The ritual space is a large circle within a triangle.  I will be buried in the middle of the central ring. Each of you will sit in a corner of the triangle with my head oriented towards the north.

These are interesting times we find ourselves in and I feel a strong urge to prepare myself and those around me for what is to come. On a personal level, I  find myself in the midst of my Saturn return. This year has been emotionally trying and downright scary at times. I find myself questioning old beliefs I held as truths and being faced with difficult decisions that test my current patterns of behavior. The tools that have served me well thus far seem ill equipped to handle the rapid evolution of the world around me.   On a larger scale we are all living in a tumultuous time on this planet.  This year, as you may have noticed, is all about change. 2012, age of Aquarius, Kali Yuga, whatever you want to call it. The dominant theme that is making itself apparent across all levels is evolve or die. This transitional period is manifesting in our lives as violent change; testing us and burning away the old so that the new may grow on fertile soil. On the the personal/micro level this year has been rough for myself and virtually everyone I’ve been acquainted with. Relationship trouble, personal injury or sickness, financial woes, etc. This time of transition is reflected across the big picture as well. Economic collapses, civil unrest, government oppression, and religious polarization. The demons, personal and otherwise, are loose upon the earth. It is obvious to me that we are sitting on the cusp of some interesting times and my intuition tells me that those who don't embrace these changes (i.e. adapt) will be burned in the years to come. When faced with adversity one is offered two choices; resist, or change. Bend or break. One can cling to the rocks and be battered by the flood or embrace the current and ride it wherever it may lead. I feel that anyone or anything resisting a current of this magnitude is going to be destroyed by the ferocity of what is to come. As intuitive, occult minded individuals I have no doubt you have reached similar conclusions. Change is terrifying, but it’s also liberating for those flexible enough to ride it out.

The Rituali Acheta is a ritual I have been working on for several months now.  The term, ‘Rituali Acheta’ is latin and literally means the cicada ritual. This ritual is using the cicada as a model and a spiritual avatar to facilitate a personal metamorphosis in myself. Around the world  in many many cultures the cicada has symbolized rebirth and immortality. It is a potent and ancient godform that has been with humanity since before recorded history. Intimately tied with the chthonic realms and solar worship it is a paradoxical entity. A union of opposites and a bridge between life and death. A fitting spiritual presence for a ritual such as this.
The purpose of this ritual is two-fold. It is at heart a shamanic death/rebirth ritual designed to burn away the old and extraneous parts of the self. A fresh start if you will. Trial by fire. Historically and mythologically all heroes must undergo such an experience to prepare for the trials to come. To gain the strength and knowledge that will allow them to navigate the difficult tasks ahead.  On a more personal level this ritual is also designed to integrate disparate or opposing parts of the self into a unified whole. In other words, it will symbolically and literally bring the parts of ones self together into a new manifestation. Kill the old so that a new, more complete and organized entity can take its place. This amalgamation of the mind/body/spirit complex is the ultimate goal of the Rituali Acheta. To destroy the old self so that a new self may flourish.

After journeying to the ritual site from camp after night fall we will take a minute to get into the groove. I will make a statement of intent and we will all meditate for a minute to clear our heads for the work. I will light some incense and set 3 bottles or bowls into the small circles in front of each of you. The bowl or bottle will contain a liquid that each of you will pour into my grave once I’m buried. After we are all comfortable and ready to go you 3 will join me in the circle. I will lay down in the grave and the three of you will cover me with earth until I'm completely buried. ( I will have a breathing tube.) as soon as I'm in the ground I will begin to mentally enter a state of gnosis while you three will return to your corners of the triangle. Once you all sit down take a moment to vacate your mind and enter a meditative state. Each of you should channel your specific energy and do your best to raise that power as strongly as possible while simultaneously projecting that energy into the central circle. In other words, raise that shit strong and push it into the middle. Once you are “in the mode” you three will take turns standing, entering the circle, saying a simple statement and then pouring your liquid and energy into the grave. Once you finish, exit the circle and sit back down. Continue meditating on your assigned energy while the next person stands and does the same. It’ll go something like this…

  • Statement of intent and invocation to my patron deity
  • I lay down in the grave in the middle of the circle
  • The three of you bury me till I'm completely under the earth
  • The three of you sit down in your corner and enter meditative space.
  • W________, you will start. You will represent Saturn. Dark, heavy, chthonic energy. You stand up, carrying the bowl of liquid, enter the circle, say a brief invocation and statement (just a few lines, I will send them to you in the next day or two as well as more detailed instructions on your specific energy and role.) then pour it over my body while projecting your energy into the ritual space. Once you are done, return to your spot and set the bowl back into the small ring in front of you. Sit down and continue to meditate and push your energy into the ritual.
  • N______, you will be the sun. Fire, heat, and solar energetics are your task. You will do the same thing. Once Wolfgang sits back down you will rise, carry your bowl into the circle, say your statement and pour the liquid into the grave. Once done, return to your spot, sit down and continue to raise the energy.
  • Ditto for you J______. You have a unique role in this energetically. You will represent balance and the unification of the two energies. In other words, you are the bridge and the null point. The midway amalgamation between saturn and the sun. I will talk to you more about what I mean by this but basically you need to be perfectly even. The void and the meeting point between these two opposite energies. Aside from that your task is the same. Stand, make your statement, pour you liquid into the grave and return to your spot.
  • Once all of you are sitting again continue to meditate and push your energy into the circle. You three are basically done until I come out of the grave.
  • Once I know that all three liquids have been dumped on me I will unify the energy being dumped into the ritual. Once I push myself into a state of ecstatic gnosis/union I will break free of my grave and climb out.
  • Once I collect myself I will remove my suit and make my final statement. As soon as I finish this statement I will clap my hand loudly and leave the ritual space.
  • Clapping my hands signals the end of the ritual. I will walk off a short ways to wash the dirt and blood, milk, etc, from myself and put on fresh clothes.
  • As soon as I clap and leave you three will get up and return to camp.
  • As soon as I'm dressed and mentally back in mundane reality I will rejoin you all at camp and we will make merry until the wee hours of the night.
  • Thus ends the Rituali Acheta.

I will provide more info in the days to come. On the day of the ritual we will do a quick walk through just to make sure we are all on the same page. I welcome any questions and concerns you may have. Text, call , email me and let me know.

The Manananggal, Flying vampire torso of the Philippines

From wikipedia - The manananggal (sometimes confused with the Wak Wak) is a mythical creature of the Philippines. It resembles a Western vampire, as an evil, man-eating monster or witch. The myth of the manananggal is popular in the Visayan region of the Philippines, especially in the western provinces of Capiz, Iloilo, and Antique.
A manananggal is described as a hideous, scary, vampire-like creature (as opposed to an aswang), often depicted as female, and capable of severing its upper torso and sprouting huge bat-like wings to fly into the night in search of its next victim. It is said that they mostly prey on sleeping, pregnant women, using an elongated proboscis-like tongue to suck the hearts of fetuses, or the blood of someone who is sleeping. The severed lower torso is left standing.

10 originality points to the Philippines. Awesome.
